El Árbol de la Vida y el tarotThe Tree of Life and the tarot

A map of ten spheres and twenty-two paths that Western esotericism links to the 22 Major Arcana and the 56 Minor Arcana. Here we explain how to read it and which card belongs to each path.

Para empezarTo begin

¿Qué es el Árbol de la Vida? What is the Tree of Life?

The Tree of Life (Etz Chaim, in Hebrew) is the central symbol of Kabbalah. It is a diagram of ten spheres, the sefirot, joined by twenty-two paths. It shows how divine light takes shape, from the subtlest, Kether, down to the material world, Malkuth. Read from the bottom up, it is also the path the soul walks to return to its source.

Each of the twenty-two paths carries a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which also has twenty-two letters. And the tarot has twenty-two Major Arcana. From that coincidence came the idea of placing each card on a path.

The tarot and Jewish Kabbalah were born separately. It was Western esotericism, from the 19th century on (with Éliphas Lévi and, above all, the Golden Dawn), that proposed joining them. It is a symbolic reading and not a teaching of traditional Jewish Kabbalah: use it as a tool for reflection, not as a closed truth.

The sefirot are read as ten qualities, or stages, an idea goes through until it becomes real. On the right of the tree are those that expand (Chokmah, Chesed, Netzach), on the left those that give shape and limits (Binah, Geburah, Hod), and in the center those that balance (Kether, Tiphareth, Yesod, Malkuth).

In this reading, the numbered cards of each suit (Ace to 10) are linked to the ten sefirot, in order.

Hay más de una forma de ordenar los caminosThere is more than one way to order the paths

There is no single correspondence accepted by every school. Here we follow the order of the letters: the first letter (Aleph) with The Fool, the second (Beth) with The Magician, and so on to the last (Tav) with The World.

The Golden Dawn, which fixed the correspondences most people use today, swaps two: it places The Star on Heh and The Emperor on Tzaddi. Other schools also swap the places of Strength and Justice. No version is "the true one": they are different maps of the same territory.
